About the film

The film sees Chaplin's famous character discover a baby deserted in an alley and after failing to find someone else to look after him he decides to raise him himself. As the years pass by the baby grows into a boy and helps his foster father in his glass repair business by breaking windows in the neighbourhood so that Chaplin could take advantage of the opportunity! When the boy is taken away from Chaplin and sent to a foster home, he rescues the child in a brilliant combination of comedy and pathos.

First National did not want Chaplin to do this as a full-length movie, preferring he make comedy shorts instead. But Chaplin stuck to his guns and the film proved not only that Chaplin was a skilled comedian but an adept filmmaker, as he seamlessly blends slapstick and sentiment with a bit of social commentary on the condition of poverty and the woeful neglect of child services.

Critics consider this to be Chaplin's most personal and autobiographical work as he grew up in poverty in a single parent household. Filming took place just ten days after the death of his own son and the bond between the Tramp and The Kid is clear to see as their connection stands against the harsh world as they transform horror into laughter.

Please note: this is a vintage-style reproduction print and is not an original vintage film poster.
